The First Thanksgiving
« On the fourth Thursday of November, people in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving, a national holiday. It honours the English and Native Americans who had a historic dinner to celebrate a good harvest.
In 1621 people from England arrive in Plymouth, USA. They prepare for the winter but do not know how to farm or fish. They are hungry and cold.
A Native American (Indian) named Squanto helps them, despite the language barrier, with agriculture. With his tribe, the Wampanoag, he teaches the pilgrims to grow corn and wheat (blé), how to hunt and fish.
One day in autumn 1623, pilgrims collect their food and invite the Native Americans to a fantastic dinner, to thank them.
Today, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving every year. After the dinner on Thursday, Friday is for shopping. It is the beginning of the Christmas season and people buy presents in preparation. »
