1. Condition et hypothèse
• On peut faire une hypothèse ou exprimer la condition grâce à des propositions subordonnées en if, comme en français.
  • condition → I'll go if you come with me.
  • hypothèse → If you travel to New York, bring me a souvenir!
• Il faut faire la concordance des temps, comme en français.
  • pour une hypothèse réaliste :
Proposition principale
Proposition subordonnée
au futur
au présent
I'll bring you a souvenir
if I go to a shop.

  • pour une hypothèse moins réalisable :
Proposition principale
Proposition subordonnée
au futur
au présent
I would have fun
if I were not so stressed.

2. La permission
• Il existe des expressions avec if qui permettent de demander poliment la permission :
Do you mind if I sit next to you?
Would you mind if we sit together?
Le sais-tu ?
L'ordre des propositions importe peu : If I work hard, I will succeed. = I will succeed if I work hard.
