Les petits boulots

Fiche

Is it worth working part-time as a student?
What would you say if someone were to come up to you on the street right now and ask, “What do you do?” Many people reading this would likely respond with, “I'm a student.” On many forms, waivers, surveys, polls and other various databases, there are many options to respond to the “occupation” question including full-time, part-time, temporary, unemployed, student or other. (…)
In high school, many of us craved economic independence so we didn't have to ask our parents for money for that one Amazon item we needed to survive. So, naturally, some of our first jobs were in a little retail store, a host at a restaurant or, if we were lucky, we landed a part-time job that paid more than minimum wage! In high school, the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. school schedule permitted us to pick up evening and weekend shifts, with extra time to finish our homework assignments. (…) University is when we learn about the smaller financial responsibilities that accumulate into a larger responsibility than we may realize. Groceries, rent, home utilities, school supplies, parking, even tuition for some, the list of mini payments goes on. Without external help, it's difficult to stay afloat, let alone be able to spend money on the finer things. (…)
Of course, you actually have to do the work. You may have to sacrifice some of your social life to pick up shifts, deal with irritating customers and complete some dirty work. But even with all of the tedious tasks, you're still developing valuable work experience, meeting new people and gaining references for future jobs.
In my eyes, the pros of working in academia outweigh the cons. There is an abundance of opportunity to make some extra cash as a student, and if you apply to the right jobs that mesh well with your schedule, it will pay off immensely (pun intended).
